Leadership is defined as â€Å"human communication which modifies the attitudes and behaviors of others in order to meet group goals and needs.† On paper this sounds so definite and fixed, but leadership is one the broadest and slightly complex topics of all. Leaders serves people best when they help them develop their own initiative and good judgment, enable them to grow, and help them become better contributors (Thomas S Bateman, 2010, p. 66). Around the world, in each community, workplace, organization, or even home, there are various types of leaders. The recipe for leadership is so diverse and is compact with different influences that make up the outcome for a leader. Sources of influence, characteristics, and approaches to leadership can really tell you what sort of leader is presented. That significant ability to influences others cannot truly be understood without addressing the interrelated topic of power. To this extent, power is necessary for leadership. It has been said that while an individual may exert power without being a leader, an individual cannot be a leader without having power (Bal, Campbell, Steed, Meddings, 2008). Thus, several studies on leadership have attempted to understand how various leaders use power to affect others.
